Program Introduction
The Ph.D. Program in Digital Technology and Communication at Fudan University's School of Journalism aims to provide high-quality research training for students interested in studying digital media and communication in the era of rapid technological advances and big data. Emphasizing both theoretical thinking and methodological application, the program features courses and research seminars reflecting the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of digital technology, exemplified by the rapid diffusion and implementation of artificial intelligence. Students will learn cutting-edge theories and methods about digital technology, and will also have the opportunity to conduct research projects under the guidance of faculty members from diverse disciplines.
Program Features
n The program emphasizes interdisciplinary training in digital communication and data analysis. Students will learn from faculty members housed in multiple disciplines including, but not limited to, communication, marketing, computer science, and data science.
n The program offers students opportunities to do field-work in China’s major tech companies and collaborate with the industry for innovative research.
n The program is connected to a few large-scale research projects spearheaded by an international and interdisciplinary team of scholars, and students will have the opportunity to participate in these projects and coauthor publications.
n The program has a partnership with other leading graduate programs at overseas universities. All enrolled students will have exchange opportunities for learning, training, and researching at our partner institutions.
Curriculum
Credits Requirement: Students are required to complete 18 credits.
Core Courses: 5 credits as the minimum requirement

Basic Courses: 5 credits as the minimum requirement

- One of these two courses:

Elective Courses: 6 credits as the minimum requirement
- Frontiers in Data Science (3 credits)
- Frontiers in Digital Communication Theories and Practices (3 credits)
- Reporting China and Reports from China (A Historical Review) (3 credits)
- PhD Program - Mixed Methods (3 credits)
- PhD Program - Chinese Politics (3 credits)
- Independent Studies (2 credits)
- Workshop (1 credit)

Graduation Requirements
- Complete at least 18 credits including core and elective courses.
- Pass comprehensive exams (written and oral).
- Complete and successfully defend an original dissertation
- Publish research articles as required by the program guideline, see below:
1) Ph.D. students are required to publish at least two peer-reviewed journal articles (indexed by SSCI or SCI, and related to the discipline) in English (In the case an article is coauthored with the advisor, the student can be the second author). All publications should list Fudan University as the primary institutional affiliation.
2) Alternatively, one peer-reviewed journal article (indexed by SSCI or SCI, and related to the discipline) plus one full-paper accepted by high-caliber international conferences (ICA, AEJMC, IAMCR) also meet the requirement.
Tuition, Scholarship and Accommodation
Tuition: 150,000 RMB per year
Scholarship:
Government scholarships are available, covering both tuition and living stipends,
including Chinese government scholarship, and Shanghai government scholarship. These scholarships are merit-based and offered on the basis of competition. For more information, please refer to:

In addition, this program features scholarships sponsored by high-tech companies, such as the Kwai(快手) International Scholarship. Such scholarships are also competitive and serve as an alternative support for those who cannot secure government scholarships.
